Do You Run Or Are You A Runner?

What’s the difference?

At first glance there doesn’t appear to be any difference. It’s just about running. Having some exercise. Keeping fit and healthy whether you run for 10 minutes or do a 10K when you get out.

When you look closer you start to see there is a world of difference in going for a run and being a runner. The same can be applied to a whole bunch of things. Do you write or are you a writer? Do you strum the guitar or are you a guitarist? Do sell things or are you a salesperson?

Is it becoming clearer?

I’m not a runner but I go for a run or a job most weeks, even if it’s once. I am a martial artist though. Every day I will practice some moves, a technique, a kata, whether it’s in a dojo (not so much at the moment due to the pandemic) or in the kitchen when I have few minutes whilst the kettle boils. Everyday I will do something related to martial arts. I do a short bout of stretching in the evening. Legs one day and upper body the next. I will read about martial arts or watch a video. Every day I do something related to martial arts and practice.

When we aim to make changes we look at the thing we want and what we have to do to get it. Makes sense. And then we move onto the next thing and do the same. These are short term bursts of activity to get you somewhere or something. By doing this we are short-changing oursleves. We are not becoming the best version we can be.

Back to running or a runner

When you run, ther’s a high chance you will not go running if it’s raining, or windy, or a little too cold or too hot.

When you are a runner none of these things will stop you. You will run no matter what. And it’s not about the ‘runner’s high’ – although it helps – it’s about who you are. Who you become.

If you want to be highly successful in whatever you choose, then you will have to be become the person who goes out of their way to be successful.

If you want to be a writer then you will write every day, even if one days it’s just for 10 minutes. And more importantly, you will write even on the days you don’t feel like it.  Same as the runner. She will run even she may not feel  like running.

By doing this, you show you are in control of what you do. You send signals to you brain and neural pathways you want this and the brain will oblige rather than persuading you to take it easy and rest up because it looks like rain.

Building habits, routines, and process is what makes runners, writer, guitarists, swimmer and all round successful people.

Start thinking about what you want to become and create the habits to be exactly that!
